The latest official releases—particularly the 2.0 series and the subsequent 2.2 update—transform the browser extension into a unified multi-chain hub where Cardano, Bitcoin, and the privacy-focused Midnight network coexist behind a single, familiar interface. The focus has shifted decisively toward practical sovereignty: giving users granular control over privacy, hardware-level security, and cross-chain asset management without the friction of juggling multiple applications. The most significant structural change is the native integration of Midnight mainnet directly inside the Lace extension. There is no separate download or new interface to learn. Midnight introduces a dual-asset model that Lace now manages seamlessly. Unshielded tokens like NIGHT function like standard transparent assets useful for governance, while shielded tokens leverage zero-knowledge technology to keep balances and transaction details private. Lace allows you to hold and manage both shielded and unshielded Midnight addresses side by side, effectively giving you a practical playground for selective disclosure. You can now generate DUST—the resource powering privacy-preserving interactions—and explore Midnight DApps directly from the wallet. This is not just a technical checkbox; it represents a philosophical shift, acknowledging that users may want transparency for some activities and confidentiality for others, all from the same vault. For users holding Bitcoin, Lace 2.2 delivered what many had been waiting for: genuine hardware wallet support for BTC. If you use a Ledger or Trezor, you can now import Bitcoin accounts and sign transactions directly with your device, all while managing your native Cardano assets from the same extension. This eliminates the frustrating need to jump between separate applications just to secure different chains. The private keys remain protected by the hardware you already trust, and the workflow is built for self-custody rather than convenience-first custodial shortcuts. Security purists received an unexpected but welcome addition with SeedSigner support. Lace became the first Cardano wallet to integrate this fully open-source, air-gapped signing device. Using animated QR codes, you can sign both ADA and Bitcoin transactions without ever plugging the signing device into your computer. SeedSigner is designed for users who want to source, build, and verify their own hardware from off-the-shelf components—a level of independent custody that goes beyond just open-source code. Lace has committed to publishing a full setup guide and walkthrough video to make this approachable for users who are new to air-gapped workflows. The everyday usability of the extension has also seen steady refinement. The 2.0.3 and 2.0.4 releases specifically targeted the pain points that emerged during the chaotic migration from Lace v1. A critical white-screen bug that prevented some users from completing migration or connecting to DApps was resolved, along with an edge case that blocked legacy Nami-imported wallets from upgrading. DApp connector visibility improved, and faster loading indicators were added throughout. The 2.0.4 update introduced a default view mode that lets you switch between Side Panel and Tab layouts with automatic fallback, plus an auto-lock timer in Wallet Settings to reduce the annoyance of frequent password prompts without compromising security. DeFi integration is also on the roadmap, with plans to access the peer-to-peer Pogun credit market and eventually allow users to execute a carry trade directly within Lace—using ADA as collateral to borrow a stablecoin and stake it in RealFi for a second yield.
